Dog
4-H members will have fun while learning more about dogs, pet citizenship, feeding, grooming, dog trials, breeds and their importance, over population, sharing a dog with others, health, dog language, community laws and careers. There are two deadlines for Dog ID’s for County Fair. The first deadline is January 16, 2023 (enrollment) and the second is June 1, 2023.
Youth Quality Assurance
If a youth is planning on selling a market animal in the 4-H sale at the Laramie County Fair, the youth is required to take QA once in each 4-H age group they are registered in (once as a junior 8-10, once as an intermediate 11-13, and once as a senior 14-18). Ages are based on the youth’s 4-H age (age as of Jan. 1st of the 4-H year: The age the youth was on Jan. 1, 2022). This includes both large and small market animal sellers.
Youth Quality Assurance
All Intermediate and Senior youth who require quality assurance will be taking the online course. This course does cost $12.00. IF this creates a hardship for a family, scholarships are available to assist with the cost. We feel that the quality of this Quality Assurance curriculum is strong and will provide youth with current information and knowledge that will help them as they raise their livestock projects. We will continue to have face-to -face Junior Quality Assurance classes. The juniors need that face-to-face interaction with other youth in their project area, as well as they get to know the Educator who is teaching that class. If a family struggles with internet at their home and they are unable to get online to complete the course, please call Brittany to schedule a time to complete the course in our office.
Listed below are the directions to complete the course through zSuite. Please call the Extension office to get a coupon code from Brittany. Do not pay directly to the YQCA website. Paying through the YQCA website makes it difficult for us to track. After the class, you will need to provide a copy of the certificate of completion to our office. I have also attached the class curriculum map from YQCA. It is listed directly above the class the 4-H age (age as of January 1, 2022) of the child who should take that class. If you have any questions or concerns, call our office and we can guide you through which classes your child needs to take and answer any additional questions.
Livestock Import Policies
As you are purchasing your animals this spring please keep the following things in mind, especially if you purchase animals from outside of Wyoming.
The Wyoming Livestock Board has policies in place regarding the importation of animals into the State of Wyoming to comply with federal regulations. They can be found at Livestock Import Rules. Please review these recommendations before purchasing your animal from out of state so you can work with your buyer to ensure you comply with Wyoming regulations.
Cats
A member will learn to appreciate animals and develop a sense of responsibility that comes from an animal’s dependence on its owner. The member also will learn about care, nutrition and feeding, cat grooming, basic cat ailments and diseases, immunization and sanitation, different cat breeds, body parts, showmanship, and career opportunities in animal science. A young cat or new kitten can be used. Member must own and care for a cat. The deadline for Cat ID’s for County Fair is July 18, 2023. Cats
Changes to 2022 Laramie County Fair Cat Show
A cat I.D. form is required to be turned in for all cats being shown at the 2022 Laramie County Fair. Also remember that all youth must be dressed in long sleeves before being allowed to show. Cat IDs are due July 18, 2023. Click the link below to access the Cat I.D. form.
Pocket Pets
Don’t have room for a lamb or even a dog? This project is for members interested in any pet – frogs, fish, ants, guinea pigs, etc. Pet selection, identification of breeds, parts of the animal, handling, housing, daily needs and health problems are taught. Further information on exhibiting, pet issues, genetics, reproduction and careers can be studied. *Guinea pigs (cavies) may become a separate project area in the future. Separate curriculum is available. Pocket Pets
Poultry
All poultry projects give members training in the best recommended practices of hatching, brooding, and rearing poultry, marketing, dressing, breeds, egg production, breeding flock, fitting and showing, judging and demonstrations. Poultry
Rabbits
Rabbit raising is a good 4-H project because it requires only a small investment and limited space. It does, however, require careful management. Members should decide whether they want to raise rabbits for meat, fur, wool, laboratory use, or showing, and select the best breed for the purpose. Rabbit
