Q. What is the highlight of your career?
A. When a client hooks into their first fish ever and they are screaming with terror/excitement while I coach them through it and pray that we land it

Q. What are challenges you encounter in your career?
A. Learning how to guide from a boat as a female, whose upper body strength doesn’t come as naturally as my male coworkers. Also, not having benefits

Q. How did you get to this career?
A. I learned to fish in college and pursued it obsessively. I was taught how to guide on the job when we became short-handed at work.

Q. What is something unique about your career most people might not know or understand about what you do?
A. To guide, you need to be a good fisherman, but you need to be an even better teacher. I have seen plenty of excellent fishermen perform poorly as guides because they cannot convey what needs to be done to catch the fish.

Q. Are there scholarship or internship opportunities available with your career? If so, where can more information about those be found?
A. The best introduction to this career is a guide school. Many fly shops offer them. They are expensive but reveal a lot about what is expected of a guide.
