Q. What is the highlight of your career?
A. Taking care of children and adults with all types of heart disease keeps me on my toes and challenges me every day

Q. What are challenges you encounter in your career?
A. Recently, I was promoted as the supervisor of our exercise lab. It has been a learning curve to understand the administrative side of healthcare. Additionally, we are starting up a new cardiac fitness program and opening a new hospital in Lehi, south of Salt Lake City.

Q. How did you get to this career?
A. I have always had an interest in how the heart functions, particularly in electrocardiograms (EKGs). Since the age of 12, I knew I wanted to help people with heart disease. I made sure to take classes and electives that would deepen my understanding of the heart.

Q. What is something unique about your career most people might not know or understand about what you do?
A. I have to be able to interpret EKGs, understand lung function, and grasp the body’s response to exercise. I must also be knowledgeable about certain heart medications and understand what to expect during an exercise study, depending on the type of heart disease the patient has.

Q. Are there scholarship or internship opportunities available with your career? If so, where can more information about those be found?
A. I did my internship 13 years ago. A lot has changed since then. Talk to your local hospital or school to see if this is an optional opportunity in your area. There are also tuition reimbursements available through Intermountain Health.
