Veterinarian

Tharp Veterinary Clinic

We asked each one of our presenters a series of questions

Below are Dr. Otto’s answers:

Q. What is the highlight of your career?

Answer:

Helping animals and the people who love them, making the community a happier and healthier place.

Q. What are challenges you encounter in your career?

Answer:

Animals and their diseases can be unpredictable. They can’t tell you what’s wrong, so you have to use your senses and experience to figure it out. Sometimes that is really hard. Veterinary medicine is expensive.

Q. How did you get to this career?

Answer:

I was interested in veterinary medicine in high school, so I started working for Tharp Veterinary as a kennel tech and vet assistant. From there, I went to college and continued working for any veterinary or animal production job I could find until I became a veterinarian.

Q. What is something unique about your career most people might not know or understand about what you do?

Answer:

Animals have a lot of the same illnesses that we do. They are diagnosed and treated very similarly, so I can easily compare my patients with those of my human colleagues. We used to be able to do CT scans at the hospital, so my patient would have to wait their turn next to the human patient who was just in the CT scanner.

Q. What type of education or degrees are required to pursue this career?

Answer:

A Bachelor’s degree and a Doctorate from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school
