Q. What is the highlight of your career?
A. The highlight of my career has been the opportunity to combine my passions for science, agriculture, and teaching into one career!
Q. What are challenges you encounter in your career?
A. The most challenging aspect of my job is finding balance both within my job and with my life outside of work.
Q. How did you get to this career?
A. I followed my passions — I perused a biology degree during my undergraduate because I knew I wanted a career in the sciences but after being away from agriculture for those 4 years I knew it was time to return to my roots. The opportunity to pursue a graduate degree in Animal Science was very appealing to me because I could continue to develop my science foundations but integrate that with the industry I grew up in, Agriculture. After my Masters I realized that I really enjoyed research and teaching at the collegiate level so I went on for a PhD which enabled me to secure my current position where I can continue to teach and research in the Animal Science.
Q. Are there scholarship or internship opportunities available with your career? If so, where can more information about those be found?
A. Yes! There is a plethora of opportunities ranging from research internships to internships in livestock production. http://www.uwyo.edu/anisci/students/internships/index.html While many of these are focused for undergraduates in college they may provide an idea of the type of opportunities or businesses who are providing internship opportunities. Furthermore, faculty at UW are always a great resource to reach out to if you are interested in seeking internship opportunities prior to college.
