Q. What is the highlight of your career?
A. My most memorable experience is mentoring first time youth hunters and being there to share their emotions of their successful hunt.  My most notable law enforcement accomplishment is my investigation of a chronic poacher resulting in several charges and conviction of the first felony in WY with a prison term of 6 years and over $40,000 in fines and restitution.

Q. What are challenges you encounter in your career?
A. I work very long hours at times, so I miss out on many of the day to day activities of my family’s life.  I deal with a wide array of people, all having different, and at times, conflicting wants and desires.  Often it is impossible to please everyone so you take the brunt of their displeasure.  At the same time, I get to experience a wide variety of really cool things.   It is not every day you can ride and pack in some of the most beautiful country on earth, or fly in a helicopter and count elk while being paid to do it.

Q. How did you get to this career?
A.  I wanted to be a game warden from a very young age.  I was an avid hunter and angler and spent all my spare time in the outdoors.  I took all the science classes I could in high school.   I got a bachelor’s degree in Range Management.   I worked many temporary jobs to gain experience. With perseverance, I stuck with my dream and was hired as a Wyoming game warden, the best career in the world.  To be hired as a Wyoming game warden you must pass a competitive exam as well as go through a psychological evaluation and a background check.  Wyoming as well as other states are currently experiencing unprecedented hiring opportunities.

Q. Are there scholarship or internship opportunities available with your career? If so, where can more information about those be found?
A. There are many temporary positions working with wildlife (and people) that will give persons experience and help prepare them to become a game warden.  Many of those positions will require some college course work.  For persons in high school, the Department does have a ride along program and some opportunities for individuals to volunteer.  The Wyoming Game Wardens Association provides scholarships to high school seniors.
